The son of the Stockton pioneer
H. F. Horn, Henry Franklin
Horn was born in Stockton 14 June 1859. He was six years old when his
sister Anna Marie was born and only eleven when his father died.
While
we do not locate him in the census again until 1900, the 1872 San
Francisco Directory shows his mother living in San Francisco. There is
also a H. F. Horn listed working as a carpenter for the H.C. League at
230 Kearney. This could be Henry at the age of thirteen working to
support his mother and sister.
The
San Francisco Directory has a
listing for him in 1885 living at 1215 Florida Street working as a shoecutter. In 1886 he again appeared in the
San Francisco Directory
as a shoecutter with U.W. Boot & Shoe Co. and an extraman on Engine
Company 13 of the San Francisco Fire Department. He lived on the west
side of Valencia Street between 25th and 26th Streets. By 1900 Henry
F. Horn was the Captain of Engine Company 19 San Francisco Fire
Department living at 1749 Market Street. From 1905 until 1908 he was
Captain of Engine Company 18 and resided at 1333 Sanchez Street. From
1908 - 1910 he was Battalion Chief of the San Francisco Fire
Department and still lived on Sanchez Street but had moved to number
1381. On July 1, 1910 Henry F. Horn was pensioned from the San
Francisco Fire Department for his full time of service and received
$337.50 quarterly. His career is documented on pages 213 and 215 of
The Exempt Firemen of San Francisco published by the authority of the
Exempt Fire Company in 1900.
In 1890 Henry married Alice Meagher. They
had five daughters; Alice born January 1892, Anna born 27 August 1893,
Mary born 27 January 1895, Harriet born December 1898 and
Eleanor born
1903. After his retirement from the Fire Department, according to the
San Francisco Directory, Henry worked briefly as an "agent". From 1913
until his death in 1940 he lived with his wife at 319 17th Street.
Alice Meagher Horn entered her husband in the
Roster of California
Pioneers Volume 8, page 103 prepared by the Native Daughters of the
Golden West. Their daughter's married names were listed as Mrs. James
F. Schou, Mrs. Richard Sterner, Mrs. Alice Harrington, Mrs. Marion E.
Bolinger and Harriet Horn.
Henry and his wife Alice were the god-parents of Helen Irene Nunan.
