John Francis' children knew little about the Uncle
Joseph Daniel Nunan, only that he died during the First World War in
training at American Lake in Camp Lewis, (now known as Fort Lewis)
Washington. Research has given us more information.
For his obituary in the San Francisco Examiner of 6 February
1918 we know Joseph Daniel was born April 1888. While the
cause of death is not stated, Helen Nunan recalled that it was
pneumonia. He was not quite 28 years old.
The City Directories of San Francisco shows that Joseph lived
with his father most of his life. His occupations were listed
in 1903 as a shademaker, in 1907 and 1910 as a salesman. In
1911 he is listed in the directory as living away from his father
but he is still a saleman.
It was believed that Joseph never married, but research shows that
he did. When looking into the burial records of the Nunan
family at St. Mary's Cemetery in Oakland, the name Mamie appeared as
being buried in the Nunan plot. Checking the San Francisco
Examiner for the date of the burial, 29 July 1912, we discovered
Joseph's marriage to May (the name given in Joseph's obituary)
Silva. The obituary for Mamie Nunan shows she died in Los
Gatos on 25 July 1912. She was the beloved wife of Joseph
D. Nunan and devoted daughter of Anthony and the late Caroline
Silva, and loving sister of A.T. and F.B. Silva and Mrs. Doretta
Conroy. She came from Erie, Pennsylvania. It appears
Joseph and Mamie were married only two years. Apparently she
died in childbirth as the cemetery records show her buried with her
baby. Joseph died only four years later from what we now know
from research to be the influenza outbreak at Camp Murray in
Washington State. He is also buried at St. Mary's Cemetery.
