The only photo we have came from Aunt Pat
According to the 1910 census, John Joseph and his sister arrived in this country in 1870. His death certificate lists his birthdate as 13 February 1865 which means he was 14 years old when he arrived in the United States. His sister was noted as 59 years old in the 1910 census, and her death certificate givers her birthdate as 1850 making her 20 years old when she came to America. All of these dates are different than the Kinsale Parish records (see chapter on Joseph Nunan). Ellen told the 1910 census-taker that she was then a widow and had been married for 35 years. If she continued counting the years of her marriage after the death of her husband, she would have married Thomas Murray in 1875 when she was 29 years old.
Unfortunately, any family papers from John Joseph seem to have been lost. The only photograph of him is a large photo which Aunt Pat gave me of a rather stern-looking elderly man sitting with his cane. It is included in the chapter outlining his life as we know it. Nothing survives of Aunty (Ellen) Murray and contact with her children appears to have been lost.
